Stars Unlimited [Paperback] Dereck Lockwood Books

I must admit I bought this book for 2 simple reasons:

1) It has stars
2) It is by a guy

Plus, the price and the picture on the cover helped push my index finger toward the "Add To Cart" button. Lately I seem to be on a star kick, as I just ordered five quilting books that feature stars in the designs. I am a bit abashed to admit I had never heard of this author, but now I see he not only contributes to major magazines - he also has his own internet enterprise.

ABOUT THE 5 PROJECTS:

There are only 5 projects in these 48-pages, but Lockwood uses this short space in big ways. His flair with pattern and color is apparent from cover to cover and rich jewel tones predominate. Stars in varying proportions and pointiness are used both as centerpiece medallions and as dazzling alternating blocks or border features. The blocks tend to be rather large (for me), some being 11 and 12 inches square. The quilts are also on the large side (the largest is 99x99 and the smallest is 65x65), but the finished sizes seem like they can be easily be modified. As a teaser to help us quilters see just how effective our quilting can become, Lockwood shows a portion of the backside of 2 of the projects. These are just lovely, and a good reason to use a mostly solid backing fabric.

SKILL LEVEL & METHODS:

Please take note that ALL 5 designs are ranked as "Advanced". I think this is due to the extensive use of templates and y-seams. While some straightforward strip-piecing is used to complement the star blocks, a beginning quilter might become frustrated by how to join odd-angled pieces together. You will need to use matching dots and alignment markings (provided on some templates) to correctly assemble a few of the more intricate stars. And that old ¼-inch seam requirement will be particularly unforgiving with every project.

MINOR MINUSES:

* Arrows for directional pressing are not shown on each illustration. You have to read the text instructions carefully. Being a visual do-er, I prefer to have as much info as possible in picture form.

* Now that I am familiar with Lockwood's design panache, I want more! For his next book, I would like to please request more than just 5 projects. (And maybe fewer or simpler templates?)

* I would love to have seen each quilt in a couple of different colorways. Lockwood has such a talent with both color and design that extra options would be like icing on this 5-layer cake.

* Unfortunately, this thrifty book is remarkably mum on the author, as there is no "about the author" information. This is a real shame, because if any designer deserves to toot their own horn and flaunt their successes in print, Dereck Lockwood is most definitely on that short list!

Did not realize that Y SEAMS were involved
These are beautiful quilt patterns, but are strictly for advanced quilters. It should have been stated somewhere in the description.
This is a great book for both beginner and experienced quilters. I would recommend this book to everyone, particularly to peoe who love star quilts.
